Who said it: Potter from M*A*S*H or Granny from The Beverly Hillbillies

Head for the hills.

Did you know that both Daisy Moses from The Beverly Hillbillies and Col. Sherman T. Potter from M*A*S*H both hail from the Ozarks?

if you're a fan of both shows, you certainly might've picked up on it...

Both characters embraced a country way of cookin' up the oddest insults and exclamations, so we got to thinking, it might be tricky to tell the two apart, if you compare their backwoods-y words side by side.

Think you know Sherman's famous "Potterisms" from Granny's scrappy native tongue? Put yourself to the test below!
  1. "This unit is running as smoothly as a pig on stilts."
  2. "I’ll load my shotgun with rock salt and bacon and season his hind quarters for him."
  3. "That is grade-A, 100% bull cookies!"
  4. "What in the name of Sweet Fanny Adams happened here?"
  5. "You mean to say that you spent my vittles money on a movie?"
  6. "Are you gonna hickory switch him or am I?"
  7. "What in Hannah's hell have you done now?"
  8. "Who in the name of Annie's argyles are all these kids?"
  9. "He’s been slippery footin’ around here like a hog on ice."
  10. "That was the oyster's ice skates."
  11. "It ain't so far-fetched, like fishin' without bait, yet it ain't impossible."
  12. "I suspect there's some 'cahootinizing' going on."

"You got 12 out of 12. You win! No need to run for the hills." Of course not; I live in the hills!

I always thought the Clampetts were from Tennessee until the movie came out. I don't know where Bugtussle was supposed to be, but they also mentioned Limestone several times, and there is a real Limestone, TN, not very far from here.

This quiz reminded me of the perfect Granny-ism. If I'm a little fuzzy, correct me. I believe that early in the series, Mr. Drysdale wanted to incorporate the Clampetts for tax purposes, so he designated Jed as president and Granny as vice-president. Granny didn't want her position because she thought vice meant evil [and in fact the Dick Cheney movie makes a pretty good argument...LOL!!]. Jed's solution was to change the V on her plaque to a N, making her the nice president!!

If memory serves correctly, it was the one where Radar gave Colonel Potter tomato juice, and spent the rest of the episode trying to get it for him daily. As it turned out, once Radar was successful, it was discovered that the colonel was allergic to tomato juice.
