Friday Fragments

Posted on August 24, 2012

It feels like we’ve time-travelled back a month, with the return of ninety degree weather and humidity…not that it’s going to make things feel any better. However, it does remind us that we’ve still got a little bit of summer left- as we approach the sinister signpost up ahead that reads “Labor Day” …meanwhile, let’s see what I have running through the wide-open spaces of my brain today… Okay- this happens fairly often- I pull out of my garage into the alley- and the automatic garage door deal closes the overhead door- I start forward- and another car starts to pull into the alley from the street. More often than not, the other driver will just stop dead, expecting me to move out of their way. What? Where am I supposed to go? The alley isn’t wide enough for two cars- am I supposed to re-open the garage door, and back in, so you can pull through- even though you are right at the lip of the alley, and it would seem logical that you could easily just pull back out onto the street?! Yesterday was the limit- after stopping, the guy just continued to pull forward- I moved forward just enough to pull over onto a neighbor’s garage apron, with barely enough space, so he could move forward. If he hadn’t been an older guy (may I add, with a sort of look of disgust on his face that almost negated this), I might have made a less than charitable comment to him. When I pull out of my garage into the alley- I am literally ONE HOUSE from the street- it’s not like I’m several houses in, and the other driver may not know what I’m doing. It seems like this is another aspect of the all-too-frequent “Look out for me” attitude of a lot of people, driving or not. Speaking of driving and cars, let me again remind you where you can find me, live and in person tomorrow Saturday- you can meet me at the Bill Jacobs Auto Group-2001 Jefferson Street in Joliet, IL from noon to two pm! I understand that we’ll be in one of the big tents set up for their backyard sales event, and they hope you’ll bring the entire family out to visit with us. That’s noon to two pm at Bill Jacobs in Joliet- tomorrow Saturday. Yes- I will be happy to take a photo with you! I was in a Menard’s (Not Svenard’s) store the other day, and passed a big display of “Larry the Cable Guy” brand barbeque chips- I understand that he has a whole line of foodstuff. I would think the perfect way to promote any of the products in this comedian’s line would be with the phrase- “Does this taste funny to you?” One of our viewers, Edward, in response to my mention of the passing of comedienne Phyllis Diller, reminded me that she appeared in an episode of Rod Serling’s “Night Gallery” titled “Pamela’s Voice”- an unusual coincidence, since “Night Gallery “ will be joining the Me-TV network schedule very soon! Let’s keep our eyes open for that episode, which Edward felt was pretty scary! (I’m sure many of you know- Serling , who didn’t have control of the content of the program, ended up really disliking the show, because the network wanted it to be a sort of “monster of the week” deal instead of the thought-provoking stories he preferred. Regardless, most of us remember it fondly, and Serling still managed to contribute his kind of stories throughout the run of the show.) So much for Friday- come back tomorrow to find out what Saturday has in store for Sven fans!
