The Beverly Hillbillies taught audiences to forget their troubles

The sitcom was disarmingly positive.

Looks can certainly be deceiving. While plenty of city folk were busy laughing at The Beverly Hillbillies, the show's actors got the last laugh - all the way to the bank.

It turns out that pretending to be a stupid man can actually turn out to be a pretty lucrative business decision.

Max Baer Jr., better known as Jethro Bodine, said during an interview with the Redlands Daily Facts that he was proud of the show he starred in. "I've got two university degrees, but I play an idiot," said Baer. "And I'm happy to do so as long as we make people laugh. What's wrong with that?"

Too many shows tend to get caught up in action and drama, but that's very rarely the way to the heart of a television viewer. To make an audience laugh is to win their heart, and guarantee that they'll keep tuning in to laugh with you over and over again.

"If you like to laugh and want to sit down and forget your problems for half an hour — if you want to be a little bit silly, or see somebody else be a little silly, watch The Beverly Hillbillies," said Baer during an interview with The News Tribune. "This show relaxes you. You don't have to think. The plot is chewed and digested for you there on the screen. We play for the people, not the critics."
