Producers noticed ''a little bit too much attraction between brother and sister'' on The Brady Bunch
Sibling rivalry really heated up!
Fans of The Brady Bunch will doubtlessly remember the twenty-third and final episode of the show's fourth season. In "A Room at the Top," things get contentious in the Brady household as the family cleans up the attic. In desperate need of a little privacy, Greg asks his dad for permission to move into this newly renovated space. Unbeknownst to them, Marcia is also vying for a similar sense of maturity, with plans of moving her bedroom up the very same stairs. Obviously, the two clash, as the eldest Brady kids both want to move out of the rooms they share with their younger siblings.
It's a fairly standard conflict in the Brady oeuvre. However, some observations on the set threatened to overshadow the onscreen narrative. As it turns out, actors Barry Williams and Maureen McCormick, who were brother and sister on the show, were more believably exhibiting an entirely different kind of relationship.
In the docuseries TV We Love, Williams recalled how the palpable energy created a problem for producer and director Lloyd Schwartz, leading to a tense discussion during the episode's production.
"I remember the scene, I remember the day," said Williams. "I remember the day Lloyd discovered that there might have been a little bit too much attraction between brother and sister."
The specific scene in question happens later in the episode, when Greg attempts to comfort Marcia after driving her to tears in an earlier confrontation. He comes to mend the conflict, but instead, Barry Williams's feelings nearly derail the whole episode.
"Maureen McCormick is very, very attractive... so I was, you know, gravitated right to her, and it was coming out in our scenes together," said Williams. "I'm sitting a little too close, leaning in a little too far. We finished the scene, and it was kind of like steam there. And he was right," he continued.
"It's very hard to hide that chemistry. Lloyd was on the set, and he pulled me aside and said, 'Good scene. I just want you to keep in mind here that she is your sister.' "
...yucky!
