Phyllis Coates had to dye her hair to avoid being recognized by fans after Adventures of Superman aired
This was the question that fans couldn't stop asking.

It turns out that being the girlfriend of one of the most powerful superheroes of all time ain't all it's cracked up to be.
When Phyllis Coates was hired to play the role of Lois Lane in the popular series Adventures of Superman, she had no idea exactly what she was signing on for. Coates only played Lois Lane for one season, and in that time, the role shot her to stardom. The actor became so famous that she was frequently mobbed in the streets.
"You know what I had to do less than a week after the program went on the air in Los Angeles?" asked Coates during an interview with The Star-Ledger. "I had to change the color of my hair! From auburn to blonde. And you know why? I couldn't go anywhere without being mobbed."
While it was overwhelming, Coates kept a good sense of humor about the situation. "It's almost like Superman's double identity," said Coates. "You know, most of the time he's Clark Kent, a mild-mannered reporter. Now I've got a double identity. Phyllis Coats and Lois Lane. Redhead and blonde."
While Adventures of Superman had no shortage of young fans, the series appealed to all ages of all genders. Coates explained that she was being approached by children and adults.
"Not only boys and girls but grown-ups," said the actor. "They'd spot me in a supermarket or just taking a walk...The first thing they wanted to know was how it feels to be held in Superman's arms."
