Robert Conrad predicted that he'd be seriously injured performing his own stunts in The Wild Wild West
Still, Conrad refused to use a stunt double.

For some actors, it isn't enough to simply perform scenes as their character; they must fully embody their role. In some cases, that includes some pretty death-defying stunts.
An actor like Robert Conrad had looked death in the face more than a few times, and he was surprisingly okay with it. As one of the stars of the hit Western series The Wild Wild West, Conrad worked hard to do most of his stunts in many of the episodes.
"I've done my own stuff in every one of them," said Conrad during an interview with The Daily News. "I've only been doubled three times. Once, when I had bursitis in both shoulders and was taking cortisone treatments. I could hardly move. Another time, I was out for three or four days because an explosion had injured my knee. The third time was when a friend of mine was out of work, needed to pick up half a hundred quick, and I let him stand in for me."
As a cross between a Western and an espionage drama, The Wild Wild West had a never-ending demand for action scenes. Conrad was only too happy to oblige, much to the dismay of the higher-ups who were worried for his safety.
"The studio doesn't like it, but I prefer to do my own stunts," said the actor. "In one segment, I did ten fight sequences. So far, I've been lucky. The knee and a scar over my eye are the only injuries. But I know full well that I'll be seriously hurt before the series is over. I know it will happen, and that's the way it'll have to be. I'm not going to use a double."
