Noel Neill's career beginnings were a dream come true
Neill was destined to be a star.
The daughter of two journalists, Noel Neill always held aspirations of joining the entertainment industry. A model as a youth, Neill later grew up to create a career in television. Most notably, the actor portrayed Lois Lane in shows like Adventures of Superman, alongside actor George Reeves.
During an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Neill revealed that her father had always hoped she would grow up and become a journalist. However, Neill realized she had a love of performance during a road trip through California.
“Mother and I drove out here [in the mid-’40s], visiting relatives along the way,” said Neill. “Through a friendly neighbor, we stayed a while in Hollywood. This neighbor was a musician who said, ‘Oh, I heard you used to sing a little bit.’ He said that an orchestra was looking for a singer. Anyway, I got to the job, and it was for one season down at the Del Mar racetrack. Naturally, I met a lot of people, and agents, and the next thing I knew, I was working at Paramount!”
According to Neill, once she was already in the industry, it was easy to make the transition from singer to actor, and even easier to book roles.
“In the old days, you could get a job,” said the actor. “It was, ‘Well, maybe we need a brunette or a blonde for the part.’ It was simple…If you had a break in shooting, you could always do a couple of days in a Western.”
