Larry Linville didn't mind that audiences hated Frank Burns
"Life is too short to have regrets."
Larry Linville wasn’t just entertaining audiences with his portrayal of Frank Burns; he was also performing a public service.
“You know, I figure as Frank Burns I was doing folks a favor,” said Linville during an interview with The Hamilton Spectator. “It’s important to recognize slime-balls like Frank - and run the other way.”
Linville spent five years on the series. But despite his decision to leave the series, Linville couldn’t seem to shake the series.
“I guess I’m destined to be known forever for M*A*S*H,” said Linville. “It was such an iconic show, and the reruns go on forever. Somewhere, about now, it’s still running. But, I finally left the program to do other things.”
Though the series was undoubtedly successful, playing Frank Burns stifled Linville after some time. In order to grow, he had to leave the familiar behind and venture into the unknown.
“Doing the same part, year in and year out, takes a toll,” said the actor. “An actor needs to stretch, to find new ways of connecting with his audience. It wasn’t an easy decision to go, but I’ve never regretted making it. Life is too short to have regrets.”
But despite the character’s less-than-warm reception, Linville was proud to be known as his M*A*S*H character.
“Wherever I go, it’s Frank they remember,” said the actor. “Now, some folks might think that’s a curse. But you know, when people nudge each other on the street and wave to me, I think it’s kinda nice.”
