Jerry Mathers once said Tony Dow was more like the Beaver than he ever was

The brothers were nothing like the Cleavers. Off camera, it was a different show entirely.

Not every actor closely resembles the television character that made them famous. Jerry Mathers became a household name in his youth as Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver on Leave It to Beaver.

However, in an interview with the Mount Vernon Argus, Mathers said he was nothing like the character he portrayed.

"Beaver is the writer’s invention. He’s a totally different person," Mathers said.

In fact, Mathers said his on-screen brother, Tony Dow, best known as Wally Cleaver, may have been more like the Beaver than he ever was.

"It’s funny because Tony, in a lot of ways, might be closer to the Beaver," Mathers said. "He’s an artist."

Even after Leave It to Beaver ended, Mathers remained closely associated with his character. Later in life, while working as a loan officer, he said some customers still expected him to reflect Beaver’s innocent personality.

"People would come to me and think, 'Oh, it’s the Beaver. I’m going to push this loan on him,'" Mathers said. "It didn’t work that way."

Dow also acknowledged that he and his character were quite different. He described Wally Cleaver as "much more conservative," adding, "He’s a neat guy, a nice, likable, honest guy who’s there when people need him."

Dow added that while he shares traits like honesty and loyalty, his real-life personality didn’t mirror Wally’s structured image.

"I don’t fit into the stereotypical father type of role," Dow said. "I’m more of a friend with my son."
