Jack Larson didn't even have to audition to play Jimmy Olsen in ''Adventures of Superman''
Here's the scoop on Superman's pal!
Not that we're acting experts, but if we had to guess, then we'd wager that auditions are one of the hardest parts in an acting career. Sure, the actual performance is nerve-wracking enough. But imagine the pressures of putting oneself out there in front of a room of indifferent producers. There's very little that could be more stressful than depending on that vulnerability for one's livelihood.
It's no wonder, then, that many established actors don't bother with auditions to secure parts. Why go to them when they'll come to you? After all, can you really imagine a Robert DeNiro having to try out for a role at this stage in his lofty career?
According to the man himself in an interview with Wizard Magazine, Jack Larson didn't have to impress any bigwigs on the spot to become TV's Jimmy Olsen.
"I'd been a kid under contract at Warner Brothers, and they came to me about Superman," said Larson.
He wasn't exactly setting the world on fire with his showbiz credentials at this point, but Larson was more than capable of delivering a memorable performance. He brought the role to life, embodying the character and becoming one of the most recognizable Jimmy Olsens in the comic book's many adaptations. But at the time, things weren't such a sure shot. According to Larson, his manager told him to "take the money and run," saying that nobody would remember the show after his 20 weeks' worth of work.
"I have never had a less true prophecy said to me in my life! It went on the air in 1953, and I became Jimmy Olsen forever."
Not bad, for a fellow who never even auditioned for the part!
