Doris Roberts praised her co-star, Ray Romano
"All of Raymond’s instincts are pure and honest."
While some television shows exist as a springboard to jumpstart an up-and-coming actor’s breakout moment, there was no such hierarchy on the set of Everybody Loves Raymond.
“I had the feeling we had something special when we did the original pilot,” said one of the show’s stars, Doris Roberts, during an interview with Knight Ridder. “For one thing, the writing was so smashingly good.”
Roberts had been acting long before she began starring in the hit sitcom; however, the role of Marie Barone introduced her to an entirely new generation. Of course, Roberts was acting alongside her co-star, Ray Romano, who was a bit newer to the television industry. Romano was an established stand-up comedian. However, the sitcom was his first major opportunity to perform in front of a mainstream audience. Though the new experience certainly rattled Romano’s nerves in the beginning, he was amongst good company.

More importantly, this sentimentality and camaraderie existed throughout the cast of Everybody Loves Raymond.
“We like each other so much,” said Roberts. “It’s really unlike anything I’ve ever done before. We’ll often go to someone’s house to do an extra rehearsal on the weekend.”
