Hervé Villechaize wasn't happy with Fantasy Island's shifting tone
"I work because it’s my job. I just don’t like what’s going on."
Though Fantasy Island's Tattoo was often considered to be Mr. Roarke’s sidekick, he certainly managed to steal the show every time he was on screen.
But the character wasn’t simply there for entertainment. Hervé Villechaize, who played Tattoo, had spent quite a bit of time developing his character. During an interview with the Associated Press, the actor described his character as a vigilant observer.
“I would say he watches everything, sees everything,” said Villechaize. “He doesn’t say much, but he knows why he’s there...He doesn’t make the decisions; he doesn’t change to what’s best or what the guests want. But he helps the guests to understand.”
Villechaize felt that Tattoo provided a bridge between Roarke and the guests of the island. As the series progressed, Fantasy Island began to rely heavily on more fantastical elements. It was a change that Villechaize didn’t necessarily enjoy.
“You know, the boss is becoming very complicated. He’s become too Faustian. He uses too many vials. He gives too many people potions to change people’s lives...I think it’s too much. It should be somewhere in between.”
Though Villechaize had his own problems with the series, he never let that get in the way of his performance.
“I don’t agree with the new concept,” said the actor. “I don’t like it. I work because it’s my job. I just don’t like what’s going on. They’re making the whole thing very sexy. They’re making Tattoo look like a lecher. I don’t agree with that. He’s not a lecherous man.
