Golden Girls creator Susan Harris had her own theories about why Sophia Petrillo was such a fan favorite.

"She says what everybody thinks."

Though each woman in The Golden Girls has her own charms, a fan-favorite character of the show was most definitely Sophia Petrillo. Though she was older, she was sharp as a tack and more than ready to share her opinion with anyone around to hear it. Some of her comments have become the most well-remembered lines of the entire series.

The show’s creator, Susan Harris, believed that Sophia was a popular character because audiences could see themselves in her. Moreover, they also saw a vision of who they wished to be.

“Yeah, I think she’s the character people identify with most,” said Harris during an interview with the Daily Times-Advocate. “She says what everybody thinks. That’s something we really have to watch. It’s such an easy laugh. It’s such a gold mine that you want to go to that well too often.”

Though Sophia was a relatable character, Harris chafed against the urgency that writing for television required. “On TV, you cannot write for adults - realistic adults,” said Harris. “The boundaries have not been stretched as much as they have in feature films. There’s just the fact that you have to write for very unnatural things like commercial breaks.”
