Dick Van Dyke shares 100 years worth of wisdom
"I have stubbornly refused to give in to the bad stuff in life," wrote the actor in a recent article.
As an eternal optimist who has lived the first 99 years fairly well, we’re more than willing to take advice from Dick Van Dyke.
Luckily, the performer made it his mission to share a few words of wisdom just before he celebrates his 100th birthday.
"I’ve made it to 99 in no small part because I have stubbornly refused to give in to the bad stuff in life: failures and defeats, personal losses, loneliness and bitterness, the physical and emotional pains of ageing,” the actor wrote in The Times. “That stuff is real, but I have not let it define me. Instead, for the vast majority of my years, I have been in what I can only describe as a full-on bear hug with the experience of living. Being alive has been doing life, not like a job, but rather like a giant playground.
Van Dyke, who has been married to Arlene Silver since 2012, also credited love with renewing his zest for life. “Without question, our ongoing romance is the most important reason I have not withered away into a hermetic grouch.
The Dick Van Dyke Show star also advised readers to keep a sense of childlike wonder, no matter their age. “Playing came naturally to all of us as kids,” wrote Van Dyke. “Then, somewhere along the way, some of us decided we had more important things to do with ourselves, and so we gave up play. Luckily for me, I got to keep playing through my entire career.
