Dick Van Dyke: ''I need an audience.''
"The shows that do comedy without an audience, I don't understand those people," the actor said.
Though Carl Reiner created The Dick Van Dyke Show, the series is seemingly inseparable from its star, Dick Van Dyke. Van Dyke starred as Rob Petrie in the hit comedy series for five seasons. Though they shot over 100 episodes, each one seems to be a fan favorite. Just like any good fan, Van Dyke had a few favorites of his own. According to an article for PEOPLE, Van Dyke admitted that he loved the season two episode, "It May Look Like a Walnut!"
"That was my favorite," Van Dyke said of the episode. "But we all got a little tied up. We all ate way too many walnuts."
Van Dyke isn’t alone in his adoration; the episode is usually included on many online lists celebrating the greatest television episodes of all time.
So rarely does such kindness follow such quality, but it seemed that the cast and crew of The Dick Van Dyke Show enjoyed the best of both worlds.
"It was such a great group to work with," Van Dyke said of his co-stars. "We just looked forward to coming to work every day. There wasn't a star in the bunch — everybody just enjoyed."
Kind and humble, Van Dyke understood that talent only had merit if there was someone to perform for. "The shows that do comedy without an audience, I don't understand those people," the actor said. "How do you do it? I need an audience. And we had a great audience every week to play to."
