Betty White had a blast filming The Golden Girls

"Everyone has been so dear and so positive; our characters are so funny and human."

From day one, The Golden Girls was nothing short of a delightful time. One of the show’s stars, Betty White, who played Rose Nylund throughout the series, knew that the show was perfection from the moment she read the script.

Obviously, by the time The Golden Girls began airing, White was already a seasoned star. During an interview with the Fresno Bee, White likened The Golden Girls script to a diamond in the rough. “I have a lot of scripts sent me, and you can’t believe the garbage!” said White. “Then all of a sudden, here was Golden Girls, a dynamite script that knocked my socks off.”

Originally, producers envisioned White playing the role of Blanche Devereaux. But White, having previously played a femme fatale on popular programs like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, felt that playing a character like Rose would be a welcome challenge.

“What fun we’ve had filming it,” said White. “Everyone has been so dear and so positive; our characters are so funny and human.”

In fact, White argued that the relatability of the series was precisely why the show appealed to such a wide audience. “Everybody has an aunt or mom who is still busy and energetic, interested in men and with a kind of woman, sometimes a trifle addled, which cuts through everything. In a world where so often the attitude toward women over 45 is ‘forget it,’ these women are marvelous individuals, and their adventures are universal.”
