Behind the scenes, Rue McClanahan admired her Golden Girls character
We could all learn a thing or two from Blanche Devereaux.
Though she had played many characters throughout her acting career, no role stuck with Rue McClanahan more than that of Blanche Devereaux. At first glance, the Golden Girls character might seem a bit superficial and self-absorbed. But over the years, Blanche demonstrated herself to be a true friend and a woman worth admiring.
McClanahan began her career on the stage before progressing into a medium like television.
“I think I always knew I wanted to be in the theatre,” the actor said during an interview with King Features. “I went to New York and studied, and I began getting roles.”

“Isn’t she wonderful?” asked the actor of her Golden Girls character. “I think what makes her so special is her ability to enjoy her life. Yes, she does love men. Very much so, and that’s just fine. But there’s so much more to her. If she is a bit self-centered at times, it’s never to where she ignores the needs of others. She is a kind, good person.”
That kindness was mirrored in McClanahan, who frequently used her charitable nature to take care of animals.
“I’ve always responded to animals,” said the actor. “I suppose it’s because I believe that people have to help them and take care of them. Animals need care, too, because we’re the ones who are robbing them of their environment.”
