One episode of Leave It to Beaver was almost ruined by one very sleepy horse

Maybe he was just horsing around.

NBC/Universal

Leave It to Beaver has dealt with its fair share of animals. Who could forget the first season episode "Captain Jack," where Wally and the Beaver attempted to raise an alligator in their toilet tank? Viewers also had the privilege of watching Beaver attempt to raise a monkey in the season three episode "Beaver's Monkey."

But according to Barbara Billingsley, the most troubling animal the cast ever had on set was actually a horse.

According to June Cleaver herself, a horse was brought in to film a scene. The horse was originally supposed to lie down and pretend to sleep.

"The trainer assured the director the horse he brought to the studio was just what he required," said Billingsley during an interview with The Los Angeles Evening Citizen News. "It may have been, but it had other ideas on that day about lying down. Four men, including the trainer and the representative of the SPCA, tried to ease the animal to the ground, but without success." Eventually, they were able to get the horse to fall asleep, after which they had a totally different problem.

"The horse couldn't be awakened," said Billingsley, "so the trainer and the veterinarian had to stay in the studio all night."

While filming with an animal can always be unpredictable, this horse's mishap led to some pretty funny moments later on, when Billingsley went to shoot a few scenes between June and Ward. While filming, the cast and crew had to compete with a very sleepy horse.

"Hugh Beaumont, who plays Ward, my husband, and I worked late to do some scenes," said Billingsley. "The snores of the horse were picked up in every one."
