Though actors work their entire careers attempting to appease an audience, fans of a star are not entitled to every piece of an actor’s life.

Alan Alda was the star of one of the most popular shows on television; however, the actor felt it was important to retain boundaries between his personal and professional life.

“We try to keep our private life private,” said Alda during an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald. “We don’t want it damaged. I ask for co-operation in this from the media, and I usually get it.”

The M*A*S*H star refused to answer questions that he felt were too personal. As a husband and a father, Alda worked to protect not only his own privacy, but the privacy of his family as well.

“We’re taught that home and family and integrity are all important values of life,” said the actor. “We’re also taught that success is everything - and at any price! I value success. Of course I do. But I don’t see why I should cut myself off from my family to achieve it, nor uproot them from their schools, friends, and neighbors. Nobody gains by being away. Everybody gains by making the effort to come back, or be home as much as possible. It can be difficult, and it has been.
