Who rode which horse on Bonanza?

Which saddle carried Little Joe and Hoss?

You can't be a rancher without the proper mode of transportation. There's no better way to get around the Ponderosa than on horseback – fast, efficient and readily available.

The horses on the show Bonanza were famously rented from the Fat Jones Stables in North Hollywood. Because the show would be filmed in color, the horses had to be easily discernible on screen to viewers. Each one had a distinct color and pattern, reflecting the personalities of the riders. These horses were performers as much as Michael Landon or Lorne Greene, and were treated as such by the viewers and creators of Bonanza merchandise.

It's time to test how closely you've paid attention; which horse belonged to which rider? Good luck!

Watch Bonanza on MeTV!

Monday - Saturday at 2 PM

*available in most MeTV markets
  1. Cochise: a Paint horse with black and white markings all over. His rider is the youngest Cartwright in the bunch.
  2. Sport: a chestnut brown horse with a white stripe down his nose. His rider built that ranch with his own two hands!
  3. Chub: the dark-brown (almost black) beauty with 3 white socks on his hooves. He was specially chosen by his rider because of how strong he was.
  4. Buck: the aptly named buckskin, all tan with a dark mane and tail, with black socks near his hooves. His rider is the "head of the team" - and of the family!

I think it was in one of the ep's. that Guy Williams guested as "Will Cartwright" (possibly S5/E29, "The Compañeros", which is not shown on MeTV for some reason), I seem to recall Adam telling Will that Adam's horse's name was either "Lancelot" or "Galahad." Can anyone corroborate this?

Adam didn't build the ranch, ben did?...lol someone messed up

The show did say that he helped build it, but also that he solely designed the ranch because he was the architect of the family!

Yeah but how old was adam when they started building that ranch? Wasn't he just a kid?

Ben Cartwright was said to have built the original, smaller homestead after moving from New Orleans with his pregnant third wife Marie and his two sons, Adam and Hoss. The grown Adam, an architect/engineer, designed the later sprawling ranch house as depicted on TV

They gave the wrong answer Ben built the house with is own hands

But Adam was the one who designed the ranch being the architect of the family, I think they worded it that way to try an confuse ya

Hoss Cartwright (Dan Blocker) was my Uncle Steve's teacher in Carlsbad N.M. before he went to Holywood. My Uncle said he was a gentle giant in real life.

I think Adam was too young to have built the ranch house.

''You got 3 out of 4'' ------------Good eye, cowboy! You sure know your horse-actors. ---They said I got #2 wrong, That Adam Cartwright built the ranch with his own two hands, But it was Ben, the father who built the Ponderosa, not Adam.

Cochise: a Paint horse with black and white markings all over. His rider is the youngest Cartwright in the bunch. How easy did they make that, with such a big clue? Everybody knows who the youngest cartwright is, the oldest boy, middle son, etc.

3 of 4 for me, also. I thought Ben Cartwright built the ranch with his bare hands ?????

The two of us are right and MeTV is wrong with their answer for Number two.

Adam rode Sport but he did not build the house by himself. He designed it when he got home from college but helped his father build it.
