Vampire VS Voodoo - It's Enough to Make You "Scream Blacula Scream"-Tonight!

Posted on May 18, 2024

Tonight on MeTV- William Marshall makes an unexpected return as the Africa vampire sired by Count Dracula himself-who we saw meet his end in the original “Blacula” film- but now revived by supernatural voodoo power to seek not only new victims, but also a cure for his cursed affliction! Cries of terror and anguish fill the air in “Scream Blacula Scream”!

This 1973 sequel, continuing the story of African prince Mamuwalde, opens with a sad event- the passing of the local voodoo leader and high priestess Mama Loa. She passes on her title and leadership to her adopted and trusted apprentice Lisa- rather than her own hot headed son Willis who fully expected to be next in line for the powerful position. Angered and seeking revenge, Willis seeks out a former deposed high priest of voodoo, who sells him some bones- all that remains of Prince Mamuwalde- dubbed “Blacula” by the King of the Vampires, Dracula (A heart-broken Mamuwalde willingly exposed himself to sunlight and was destroyed at the end of the first film). Willis plans to use a voodoo ritual to bring Blacula back from the dead and aid him in his vengeance against Lisa.

 by

He does the ritual- and it seems to have failed- until Blacula appears, and thirsting for blood, bites Willis! The young man now becomes the slave of the vampire prince and a vampire himself. When he informs Mamuwalde about a special party-an exposition featuring African art. The vampire is intrigues- but before heading to the party, claims more new victims. He then makes his way to the party in the home of art collector and ex-police officer Justin, whose girlfriend by coincidence, happens to be the newly crowned voodoo high priestess Lisa! Mamuwalde not only finds her very attractive, but also realizes that, with the strong voodoo powers she possesses, she might be able to remove the curse of vampirism from his being. He also witnesses a party guest accidentally cutting herself- and the sight of her blood proves very tempting. He exits the party- and secretly re-enters the house to claim his next victim!

Soon the growing number of victims- all with similar bite marks on their necks- convinces the suspicious Justin to try to enlist his former L.A.P.D. lieutenant to search for the perpetrator- who he believes must be an actual vampire. Meanwhile, Lisa has a dangerous encounter that leads Blacula to reveal his true self to her- and gives her no alternative but to perform the ritual that will remove his curse. Will Mamuwalde finally be cured- or will he lead his army of new living dead victims to destroy all who oppose him?

Once again- William Marshall gives the role of the vampire prince dignity and intelligence- but also a fiendish savagery. We’ll talk about the cast, which includes the actress who has been called the first female action star- Pam Grier, and some other familiar faces- and we’ll bring you look at a soulless TV series-yet another helping of Nostalgiaferatoo nonsense- a new song- some vintage batty Sven business- and more!

“Scream Blacula Scream” will fill your ears and eyes tonight at 8 pm eastern/pacific, and 7 central time. We invite you to join in the live-Tweeting during the show on Twitter- and remind you to include the hashtag #svengoolie in your Tweets. Just a note to say how much I enjoyed last week's movie, "Scream Blacula Scream." I think there is a tendency to think of blaxploitation films as lowbrow, but this was a wonderful film! William Marshall was superb, and I loved all those closeups on the shockingly beautiful face of Pam Grier. I didn't see any of the Blacula movies growing up, so I'm very grateful that Sven has shown them.

As we prepare to close out the SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM blog, please allow me to make one final, nitpicking point. Some of you may have heard of the term "hoodoo," which is easy to confuse with "voodoo." Even though both terms refer to the worship of many of the same dieties and share many of the same rituals, there is a difference. Voodoo, as it had been depicted in the movie, is a religion, with formal rules and beliefs, and wuth distinct differences between African voodoo and Haitian voodoo. Hoodoo, on the other hand, Is a practice, often involving herbal and roots healing.

Will be taking the kids out this weekend for a family history lesson, and some noise making.

Grandpa did some stuff in the 40s.

Well, if you're gonna do guns, it's good to get some training. Good thing you have lots of open spaces out your way!

On any given day, no person even gets into range.

I could not even hit the neighbor's house if I walked half way there.

My wife and I just returned from a vacation in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This was supposed to be a summer vacation, but we had a change of plans. We went to the Soo Locks, Tahquamenon Falls and even saw a troll!

PatS drummerman56 2 months ago
I think the troll qualifies it as blog-related. Wish you had a Sven-shirt picture to go with it!

First I have to buy a Sven shirt!

Actor Darryl Hickman has passed away at the age of 92. The older brother of Dwayne Hickman (the star of the sitcom THE MANY LOVES OF DOBIE GILLIS), Darryl had been a successful child actor before transitioning to adult roles. His roles of most interest to Svengoolie fans would be in three Vincent Price films: THE TINGLER, DR. GOLDFOOT AND THE BIKINI MACHINE, and DR. GOLDFOOT AND THE GIRL BOMBS. RIP, Mr. Hickman.
TheKodakKid daleuhlmann 2 months ago
Hickman met the woman who would be come his first wife while they were filming “The Tinger,” Pamela Lincoln.

I read the summary on the interweb -- several derivative plot points, but should be spectacular in color. Hope it's available.

We’re just yanking you around. Google identifies ia as a “retro jukebox icon.” The semi-circle in the top it the window through which one view the turntable and disc selector., the U-shaped space immediately below is the speaker grill, and the arch arcing over it is the backlit plastic decorative fascia.
PatS Jack 2 months ago
And I think the fancy name is "avatar." Change if you want, keep if you want.
Jack PatS 2 months ago
Correct. Prblemchild is using it as an avatar, but Google images identified it as “retro jukebox icon.”

Miscellaneous ramblings…

Why do we drive on parkways and park in driveways?

How do you know when sour cream goes bad?

How is that someone can drink a 12 pack of their fav beer but can’t drink a 12 pack of soda?

Someone driving faster than you is a Speed demon and someone driving slower is a slowpoke

I may have to get old, but I never have to grow up.

Maybe because they end up in the circular file 🗑

RIP Morgan Spurlock.

Michael Conrad, who played Lieutenant Harvey Dunlop in SCREAM BLACULA SCREAM, had earlier played Mike Stivic's uncle in two episodes of ALL IN THE FAMILY. Even earlier, he had played a police officer in an episode of the original TWILIGHT ZONE entitled "Black Leather Jackets" (which had also starred one of Catbat's favorite actors, Denver Pyle) and a murder victim in an episode of ... wait for it ... PERRY MASON! Also, he wore a "Planet of the Apes"-inspired mask or makeup throughout a 1968, third-season episode called "Fugitives in Space."

daleuhlmann Jack 2 months ago
Thank you for the additional background, Jack! I had figuted that Chambers had worked on both this episode and PLANET OF THE APES because both LOST IN SPACE and that film were produced by Twentieth-Century Fox. I am still not "4 Imprint Certain," though, if Conrad had worn a mask or full facial makeup as Creech.

Every year Memorial Day is honored for those who have died while serving in the Armed Forces. It is a solemn day of remembrance. As you gather with family and friends this Memorial Day weekend, say a prayer and remember those who have fallen while fighting for our freedom.

My 8yo grandson somehow appropriated and got loose over here with a day planner, probably my daughter-in-law's.
Him: Can we go to the water park on Memorial Day?
Me: Absolutely, that will be a blast!
Him: *clicks pen*
He's going back home in a couple of hours, and we're going to Galveston until Tuesday.
This will not end well.
No Big Broadcast for us this week. See y'all on the flip. Have fun, kiddos and Happy Memorial Day to all.
Same to you, NPC!
