Don't be a stick in the mud! "Swamp Thing" - Tonight!

Posted on July 18, 2026

Swamp Thing … you make Adrienne Barbeau’s heart sing! Dr. Alec Holland is just your run of the mill scientist working on bio-engineering a new animal plant hybrid in his lab which happens to be set up in a swamp. Alice Cable is the government worker, new to the swamp to replace the mysteriously disappeared previous scientist. Dr. Holland accidentally spills an experimental formula on himself and turns into a half man/half plant named… Swamp Thing! An opportunist named Arcane wants the formula and will stop at nothing to get it. Swamp Thing will do anything to protect the swamp and the lovely Alice Cable. Tonight, on MeTV - The Sven Squad – Gwengoolie, Nostalgiaferatoo and IMP aka Ignatius Malvolio Prankenstein along with The Man In The Hat himself – Svengoolie – are premiering 1982’s “Swamp Thing” on House of Svengoolie.

It’s 1982 and scientist Alec Holland (Ray Wise) is working in his lab located in a swamp the southern U.S. with his sister Dr. Linda Holland (Nanette Brown). The Hollands have a new formula for rapid plant growth that wealthy Arcane (Louis Jourdan) wants desperately. A new scientist, Alice Cable (Adrienne Barbeau) shows up to replace another scientist from the lab who disappeared mysteriously. Alice and Alec connect over their love of the beauty they see in the nature of the swamp. Glad they found each other because if that’s a dating non-negotiable, you’re working with a very small pool. In a jealous rage, Arcane attacks the Hollands lab, burns it down, kills Linda while Alec spills the formula on himself transforming into Swap Thing (Dick Durock). Arcane takes Alice captive, hunts Swamp Thing, desperately tries to piece together the Holland formula from the ashes of the lab and makes a few more bad choices along the way. Swamp Thing don’t play though. He fancies Alice. He can flip Arcane’s henchman’s swamp boats with a single arm …er.. uh… branch? He can take more bullets than a target range. Arcane has a problem on his hands.

This 1982 film was produced by Swamp Films (that is not a joke) and distributed by Embassy Pictures (they are not an actual functioning embassy). This film was written AND directed by horror legend Wes Craven himself. This was exactly one decade after he had made his writing and directing debut with the 1972 screamer “The Last House On The Left.” “Swamp Thing” was made for a tight $2.5 million dollars, and Craven delivered it on time and on budget. The film unfortunately didn’t crack the Top 10 at the box office, but it went on to frequent airings on the young HBO network as well garner a big following on VHS. The audience who it found there, warranted the filmmakers to follow up with the 1989 sequel “The Return Of Swamp Thing”.

Tonight Nosti welcomes the star of “Swamp Thing” Adrienne Barbeau to Nosti’s Nook for a deep dive interview of Adrienne’s experience working on the film. Imp leads Gwengoolie and Nostalgiaferatoo through everyone’s favorite plant-based game show “Bite Me.” And Gwengoolie welcomes a new visitor named Al Gee to the dungeon.
