For a detective series, a show like Cannon enjoyed a fairly lengthy run. The crime show ran for five years, and roughly 122 episodes. But while plenty of crime shows today are centered around an ensemble cast, there was really only one man who carried a majority of Cannon stories: William Conrad.

Conrad was undoubtedly the star of his own series, which is commonly considered every young actor's dream. However, during an interview in 1983, Conrad confessed why he chose to leave the series.

"I was sick of it," said Conrad during an interview with the Booth News Service. "It was an ice-breaker of a character, a person playing a lead who wasn't six-foot-seven. But it just got to be too much."

In fact, Conrad was so deeply put off by his experience that he admitted it would take a great deal to get him to return to television.

"It would have to be beautiful," said the actor, "as to be unbelievable."

At that time, Conrad was actually working on the stage in a production of Fiddler on the Roof. While television didn't seem to be Conrad's cup of tea, he certainly had an appreciation for the theater.

"I've never had so much fun in my life," said the actor. "I've always wanted to be in a musical, and this one is great."

Ultimately, Conrad was a simple man who longed for quiet comforts that he felt were important in life. "I just want to be happy," said Conrad. "I don't want to accomplish anything."
