Wayne Rogers was captivated by the ''insanity'' of M*A*S*H
"What better place to act out your fantasies than in a show that calls for it?"

Though Wayne Rogers wasn't on M*A*S*H for a particularly long time, he was certainly passionate about his character. For three years, Rogers played Trapper John in the series. While the actor only starred in the series for about three years, the character made an impact on the hearts and minds.
Perhaps that impact wouldn't be quite so strong if Rogers hadn't seen a kindred spirit in Trapper John. He was proud of the work that his character had accomplished, the lengths that he was willing to go to in order to help another human being.
"These guys save lives," said Rogers during an interview with The Times Herald. "They'll do whatever has to be done within the bounds of ethics. They'll do anything. I think I have that philosophy of life."
When Rogers looked at Trapper John, he saw a version of himself. The two men shared a certain disdain for conformity and a desire to forge their own path.
"I could never be part of a large organization unless I was renting. I think to conform is in many ways to deny imagination."
More than anything, Rogers seemed to see no issues with bringing himself to the brink in order to give an honest performance. In M*A*S*H, the actor saw an opportunity to live out that dream.
"I'm fascinated by those things that lend themselves to insanity," said the actor. "What better place to act out your fantasies than in a show that calls for it?"
