Robert Wagner explained why fans had to wait so long for a Hart to Hart reunion
"We’ve tried so many times to do it," said series star Robert Wagner.
Hart to Hart was a well-loved series, which is why so many fans were shocked when the show was suddenly cancelled after its fifth season.
Two people who were deeply hurt by the loss were series stars Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers. Powers and Wagner were more than just co-stars; they had become good friends and genuinely enjoyed working together.
During a 1991 interview, Wagner was pressed about a potential Hart to Hart reunion, though he didn’t seem incredibly optimistic. “We’ve tried so many times to do it,” Wagner said of a Hart to Hart reunion during a 1991 interview with the Tribune Media Services. “We proposed all kinds of different arrangements to get it done - doing it without salaries, doing it with percentages (of potential profits), etc.”
With Wagner and Powers willing to make big sacrifices to see the Harts reunite, it boggles the mind why the powers that be had little interest in making their dreams a reality. Wagner seemed to theorise that the primary reason for the reluctance, like all things, was money.
“The big problem, as I understand it, is with syndication,” said the actor. “We’re told the issue is that if we come out with something new, it can take away from the syndication profits (of the original series), but it seems to me the boat has sailed on that.”
These problems weren’t destined to last forever. Wagner and Powers reunited for eight telemovies focused on Hart to Hart, beginning in 1993.
