Robert Wagner admitted he never felt totally at ease with his success
“I’ve never felt like I have it made,” said Wagner.
While there is security in success, it doesn’t guarantee everlasting safety. Though fame can earn you a pretty penny, every actor knows that they’re only as good as their next role.
Appearing in movies like Prince Valiant (1954) and A Kiss Before Dying (1956), Robert Wagner was a more than capable film actor. However, he truly made his mark on television, starring in programs like It Takes a Thief and Switch. In 1979, Wagner starred in the popular series, Hart to Hart. With Stefanie Powers, Wagner played one half of a married couple that spent their time sleuthing.
Despite the steady stream of roles, Wagner admitted that he never truly felt safe from failure.
“I’ve never felt like I have it made,” said Wagner during an interview with The Sacramento Union. “I don’t think anybody does.” Granted, the actor’s more recent successes gave him a bit of confidence, though he wasn’t willing to remain idle for too long.
“I feel more comfortable now than I did, say, 10 years ago,” said Wagner. “But there are no sure things in this business - or in life, either, for that matter.”
The unexpected cancellation of Wagner’s shows, like It Takes a Thief and Hart to Hart, only cemented his feelings regarding the matter. “I thought It Takes a Thief was a sure thing,” said the actor. “I was sure right up to the moment it was cancelled.”
Hart to Hart lasted for five seasons before it was cancelled, much to the dismay of fans everywhere.
