Tim Curry, legendary actor of the stage and screen who played iconic oddballs in classic movies, has passed away.

He played pirates, evil clowns, haunted organs, snobby concierges, murderous butlers, and even William Shakespeare himself, but it's hard to pin Curry down to just one role when he had so many incredible performances. Curry was a chameleon of an actor who loved playing unconventional characters in all mediums: on stage, on screen, and in a recording booth.

Curry's first major role was in the original London cast of Hair, which proved to be a fated opportunity because in this production he met writer Richard O'Brien, who went on to write one of Curry's most pivotal roles: Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. 

Following the success of Rocky Horror, Curry starred as William Shakespeare in the miniseries Will Shakespeare, Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist, Rooster in Annie, and Wadsworth the Butler in Clue. Even as his star was rising in the world of film and television, Curry always remained loyal to his first home, the theater. While starring in other projects, Curry performed in the original West End cast of Amadeus, won a Tony Award for his performance of The Pirate King in the 1982 production of The Pirates of Penzance, and became one of the most beloved actors to ever play King Arthur in Spamalot, among other dedicated stage performances.

Plenty of great movies and miniseries became certified classics because of Curry's involvement; Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, The Hunt for Red October, Clue, IT, and Muppet Treasure Island come to mind. He continued acting regularly until he experienced a major stroke in 2012, but even amongst his health issues, Curry continued voice acting and even reprised his role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter for a live table reading of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Beyond his legendary live-action roles, Tim Curry was an accomplished voice actor in the animated world, voicing characters in over 100 productions.

Several of his animated roles were nominated for awards; he was nominated for an Annie Award for Voice Acting in a Feature Production for his performance as Forte in Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, and he won a Daytime Emmy for his performance as Captain Hook in Peter Pan & the Pirates.

In addition to all of his acting roles, Tim Curry was an accomplished singer, recording three studio albums and was featured in The Best of Tim Curry album, which featured songs from his albums.

The incredible actor will be missed and will live on through his many classic perfomances. He was 80 years old.
