Ruth Buzzi, perhaps best known as her recurring character from Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, "The Bag Lady", has passed away.

Buzzi was cast on Laugh-In after her appearance in the short-lived The Steve Allen Comedy Hour and was one of producer George Schlatter’s first hires for the new series. Buzzi was the only featured player to appear in every episode of Laugh-In including the pilot for the show and the Laugh-In television special. She had several recurring characters including Busy-Buzzi, Doris Swizzler, and Flicker Farkle, however, the one that she would become famous for was as "bad lady" Gladys Ormphby, who would often be prepositioned by Arte Johnson's "dirty old man" character, only to use her purse as a weapon.

Buzzi would reprise her character in several of the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, attacking both the honoree and Martin himself with her purse.

She also had a recurring role on That Girl as Marlo Thomas's character Ann Marie's friend, Margie "Pete" Peterson. In 1975, she co-starred alongside Gomer Pyle himself, Jim Nabors, in the short-lived sci-fi comedy The Lost Saucer.

Buzzi was a popular guest on television shows and appeared over 200 times as a guest, including on The Carol Burnett Show, Tony Orlando and Dawn, The Gong Show, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and more.

In 1993, Buzzi joined the cast of Sesame Street as shopkeeper Ruthie. When the shop set was removed in 1999, Buzzi continued to appear on the show as other characters. She voiced Suzie Kabloozie and her pet cat, Feff, in animated shorts that were shown until 2008.

Buzzi had an active career as a voice actor, voicing Mama Bear on The Berenstain Bears, Nose Marie in Pound Puppies, and appearing as a guest voice in productions like the Smurfs, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, The Jetsons, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and more.

In 2021, Buzzi announced on social media that she was retiring from acting. The actress, comedian, and voice actor was 88 years old.
