In an ensemble cast, an inflated ego is as good as poison. Those working with costars must understand that the parts make the whole, and that their partner’s contribution is just as valuable as their own.

Despite his good looks and wealth of talent, Lyle Waggoner had no intention of turning The Carol Burnett Show into an opportunity to steamroll his costars and take over the series.

In an interview with the Palm Beach Post, Waggoner seemed comfortable with his smaller role on the variety series. Early in his career, the actor viewed it as a delightful learning opportunity.

“My role may not seem very important, but it’s a big challenge and good experience,” said Waggoner. “Changing characters from minute to minute is not easy.”

Like any good student, Waggoner frequently expressed gratitude for where he came from. The actor also looked to actors like Harvey Korman and Carol Burnett as more than just co-stars. Waggoner viewed them as teachers.

“I keep it in perspective,” said the actor. “I know that everything that has happened to me recently is a direct result of Carol’s show. And, working around Carol and Harvey Korman is like an acting lesson every day. There cannot possibly be two more creative and brilliant comedians than those two. I realize I’m the third lead, and I’ll get whatever is left of the script after Carol, Harvey, and the guest stars are taken care of. But it’s still hard work and challenging. I’m grateful for the opportunity.”
