The entertainment industry can feel like a cutthroat business, where kindness is rare, and friendship is precious. Though plenty of television sets fell to a clash of egos, the cast of M*A*S*H had a bond that only strengthened the quality of the series.

Loretta Swit, best known for playing Margaret Houlihan throughout the series, spoke to the Richmond Times-Dispatch about her friendship with her fellow cast members. Though the series was still in its infancy, the bond between the actors was strong. Swit referred to her co-stars as "my five guys.” She was referring to Alan Alda, Wayne Rogers, McLean Stevenson, Larry Linville, and Gary Burghoff.

“We’ve only been on the air a year, but the cast is just about the best-known story in Hollywood. When we got together this month to start the new season, it was like a reunion of school kids - all the hugging, laughing, and screaming.”

Though each actor on the set of M*A*S*H had lived a different life, they shared similar experiences that tied them together. Swit said that not only were the cast friends, but they also made each other better actors.

“We’re extraordinarily close because we’re all from the theater and lived on the East Coast,” said Swit. “So we have a similar approach to our work. We help one another and criticize ourselves to make the show better.”
