Kate Jackson fought for better writing on Charlie's Angels
"I learned how easily you can get slapped down if you stand up for what you believe in," said the actor.
Just like her character on Charlie’s Angels, Kate Jackson had no issue fighting for better treatment. Jackson starred as Sabrina Duncan in the popular crime series, Charlie’s Angels. Jackson remained on the series for three years and was nominated for an Emmy and a Golden Globe award for her portrayal.
While her time on the series was shorter than some of her co-stars, Jackson was crucial to the series during some of its more formative years.
Charlie’s Angels was frequently derided by critics who lambasted the series as superficial— and it was a criticism that Jackson couldn’t help but agree with. “Yes, I was unhappy with the quality of the show, and did complain,” said Jackson during an interview with the Waterloo Region Record. “But it didn’t do much good.”
In fact, Jackson seemed to insinuate that speaking up actually harmed her career while working on the show. “When you keep giving, keep putting out, keep trying - and when you try to do your best, people around you get grumpy,” said Jackson.
The actor wasn’t always displeased with living as an Angel. “It’s such a paradox,” said Jackson. “When you’re signed for a series, you’re so ecstatic, you want so badly for it to succeed. Then a couple of years later, you tell yourself, ‘I don’t know if I can take it any more.’ You’re filled with frustration because you’re not allowed to do your best.”
Though her time on the series had soured by the time Jackson elected to depart the series, it didn’t shake her belief in speaking up for what she knew was right.
“I learned how easily you can get slapped down if you stand up for what you believe in,” Jackson said of her time on the show. “Yet, you have to be proud of what you do. You can’t allow yourself to get lazy, to just take the money and run. At least I couldn’t.”
