Jamie Farr loved new additions to the M*A*S*H cast
"It's an extra element to the show."
Joining a new cast in a television show can feel stressful at times. However, in a cast like M*A*S*H, which was well known for its changing actors, many actors felt at ease with the ongoing shifts in their series.
In fact, actors like Jamie Farr, who played Klinger in the series, actually saw it as a beneficial opportunity when actors like Harry Morgan and Mike Farrell joined the cast.
Farr explained that while the new actors were still learning the ropes, writers and directors would be more reliant on the seasoned pros of the series.
"They'll be depending more on the old-timers on the show and let our newcomers grow into their roles," said Farr during an interview with the Lexington Herald-Leader.
At the time of the interview, the new Morgan and Farrell hadn't made their introduction on the series, but Farr felt they were in good hands.
"I really don't know how well the audience will take the new characters," said the actor. "I'm a poor judge of that. But I know they fit in with the cast very well."
Furthermore, Farr felt that with new characters came new plot ideas and new perspectives. For example, Farr believed that Farrell's character added a fresh pair of eyes to the 4077th.
"As a character, he has some growth yet," said Farr. "He's seeing what is happening, and you are getting a reaction from his point of view. And we are the veterans and have seen it. It's an extra element to the show."
