Harry Morgan explained why AfterMASH failed
Morgan said the series "just never worked."
Though many successes are certainly worthy of celebration, prosperity doesn’t always guarantee longevity. Take, for example, a show like M*A*S*H. Based on the 1970 film, the series ran for a wildly successful eleven seasons. The show was celebrated by critics and audiences everywhere.
Later, the series was followed by the 1983 series, AfterMASH. The sitcom focused on the postwar lives of former members of the 4077th, including Colonel Sherman Potter, Sergeant Maxwell Klinger, and Father John Mulcahy.
The series never quite reached the same level of success that its predecessor had achieved. It lasted for roughly two seasons before its cancellation.
In retrospect, series star Harry Morgan was more than frank about the show’s shortcomings.
“AfterMASH just never worked,” Morgan said during an interview with the Newspaper Enterprise Assn. “We did everything we could think of to fix it, but nothing helped. They kept changing the cast; I had two different ladies playing my wife, for example, but nothing helped. I think, now, that it just wasn’t a good idea in the first place.”
But while the series never performed as well as creators had hoped, Morgan never let it dampen his career. “I’ll do something if it’s interesting.”
