Some characters are a far cry from the actors who play them, but Harry Morgan bore a striking resemblance to the character he played on M*A*S*H.

Morgan joined the cast of the popular sitcom in its fourth season, and while he loved the role, he admitted that it wasn’t too far away from his own personality.

“My character is practically me,” said the actor during an interview with The Boston Globe. “I think it’s very hard for most actors to get away from themselves. I played mostly the heavy when I first started in pictures, and I’ve played everything you can think of, but I don’t know in how many cases I really got that far away from myself.”

Morgan remained in the cast until the series ended in 1983. In that time, M*A*S*H became one of the most popular shows on television, and Morgan became universally recognized and celebrated by fans everywhere.

Still, when looking back at the series in 1983, he acknowledged that while working on the series didn’t change him professionally, it certainly altered him personally.

“I don’t think it’s changed me as an actor,” said Morgan. “It may have helped me a bit as a human being. You can’t spend that many years with this bunch, getting such deep satisfaction out of your work, without it having some effect on you, and for the better.”
