While Superman and Clark Kent are all well and good, it’s worth noting that George Reeves was no slouch either. Reeves played the Man of Steel for six years on the popular series, Adventures of Superman. During that time, the actor became a household name, as well as a hero to audience members everywhere. Particularly, children quickly became enamored with Reeves, believing him to be inseparable from the character he was playing on television.

“I can’t really fly in private life,” joked Reeves during an interview with the Spokane Chronicle, “and particularly not in a newspaper office.”

Reeves was aware that his job wasn’t only a TV role, but also a model for young people to look up to. The actor ensured that his behaviors both on and off-screen were exactly what many had come to expect from their favorite superhero.“My only flying is on television, and I advise boys and girls not to try it,” said the actor. “Too risky.”

In real life, Reeves was as kindhearted and brave as his character on television. The actor’s off-time was frequently taken up by preparation for the television series, including rigorous exercise. In an article, Reeves revealed that he wasn’t one to let a body double do the heavy lifting while working on Adventures of Superman. That’s right, folks; the Man of Steel did plenty of his own stunts, and then some.

“I like judo, and it keeps me fit,” said Reeves. “And I need to keep fit for the role of Superman. I never use a double.”
