Doris Roberts on her character Marie: ''She's a buttinski''

Marie was a balancing act.

Warner Bros.

In a 2005 interview with the Television Academy Foundation, Doris Roberts spoke extensively about her time as Marie Barone on the critically acclaimed Everybody Loves Raymond. While everybody on that show was firing on all cylinders, Roberts, in particular, stood out for how universally relatable her character was. She inhabited Marie in a way that felt straight out of your own family. If she wasn't exactly like your mom, you know a mom like her.

But there was one critical difference: She was (presumably) funnier than your mom, and that made her incredibly likable. Roberts had some of the greatest TV writers at the time crafting Marie's lines. So while she might have gotten on her family's nerves, Marie was a joy to watch. After all, unlike our real-life families, we got to change the channel if we wanted to.

Of her character, Roberts said:

“She is a control freak, she’s a pain in the neck, she’s a buttinski. I mean, she’s so many things that are annoying, but I make you laugh.”

It certainly didn't help that Roberts was hilarious as Marie. In fact, this might've been what kept her from being a grating character on the show. Instead of triggering those of us with overbearing matron figures, Roberts provided a ton of laughter. And this made her incredibly well-liked all across the globe.

“Everywhere I go, they know me. They know my name, Doris, they know Marie Barone, they say, ‘Thank you for the humor you bring into our home.’ I went on a cruise around South America. Every country I went to, every little hamlet, every little city knows Everybody Loves Raymond.”
