Sometimes, the silliest shows have the most to teach us.

While Gilligan’s Island has sometimes been dismissed as a children’s show or anything but quality TV, the cast, crew, and die-hard fans would beg to differ.

It seems that whenever a television show gains a reputation for being enjoyed by children, adults convince themselves that it has somehow lost its merit.

While some children may have a simpler, more innocent sense of humor than many adults, a show like Gilligan’s Island should be celebrated for its ability to entertain children and adults alike.

According to an Associated Press article, Dawn Wells, who played girl-next-door Mary Ann, turned castaway, made the sensible argument that the show could teach children valuable life lessons while entertaining them.

"As silly as it seems to all of us, it has made a difference in a lot of children’s lives," Wells said. "Gilligan is a buffoon that makes mistakes, and I cannot tell you how many kids come up and say, 'But you loved him anyway.'"

Unlike many actors who might consider a role in children’s media embarrassing, Wells always wore her character with pride.

"I’m very proud to say that I was Mary Ann," Wells said. "It’s not all I am, it’s not all I do. It was a wonderful experience, I have no negativity about it."
