Brad Garrett on the similarities between Jackie Gleason and Robert Barone
"I’ve always had a kind of louder-than-life bravado and kind of over-the-top delivery," said Garrett.
Though typically well regarded for his comedic work, Brad Garrett has more than demonstrated his aptitude for the more dramatic. In fact, the actor’s comedic background allowed him the unique position of seeing the more dramatic side of those the public normally laughs at.
In 2002, Garrett portrayed comedian Jackie Gleason in the television film Gleason. It was a responsibility he did not take lightly.
“I felt a huge responsibility because Gleason’s one of these characters who was loved in the industry and outside,” Garrett said during an interview with the Associated Press.

“I’ve always had a kind of louder-than-life bravado and kind of over-the-top delivery,” said Garrett, who was known for his work on the popular sitcom, Everybody Loves Raymond.
In addition to his work on The Honeymooners, Gleason was also well known for his “Poor Soul” character, a grief-stricken man who Garrett felt represented many of the characters he had previously played. “I also got cast in the ‘Poor Soul’ type of roles,” said the actor. “Robert is really the ‘Poor Soul.’…The down-and-out loser that Kramden was.”
