Acting on a show like The Golden Girls was a strange delight, even for a seasoned actor like Betty White.

During an interview with The Jackson County Banner, the actor argued that her series, The Golden Girls, gave women permission to develop and live a fruitful life, despite what society would have them believe.

“I feel our show, The Golden Girls, makes clear that these are not women who are going to be winding down over the years they have left, but are, instead, continuing to grow,” said the actor. “They’re not about to simply wait life out; they’re very much involved with it. They’re finding things that are important to them, including their friendship and their sense of being a family. And family is very important. No matter how tall Dorothy is, her very small mother, Sophia, still tells her what to do.”

While the show contributed great leaps, after seven seasons, Bea Arthur decided that it was time to grow beyond The Golden Girls. During their time on the series, White and Arthur had grown close, and White was proud of her friend.

“Of course, things can change,” said the actor. “But Bea feels that after seven years she’d like to do something else. As for me, I can hardly believe that we’ve done seven years already. I feel the show is as fresh as ever, and I really enjoy going to work every day. And I feel very lucky because I’m working with people who are not only some of the best in the business - Rue, Bea, and Estelle - but who are also my very dear friends.”
