If the creators of The Walton's say they weren't inspired by Spencer's Mountain (staring Henry Fonda) they are lying.

Maybe there was some inspiration there as well, but Earl Hamner, Jr. (who wrote The Homecoming) was the creator of The Waltons.

Earl Hamner, Jr. also wrote Spencer's Mountain.

The Waltons was said to be (by Hamner) Earl Hamner’s recollections from his Virginia childhood, growing up in the Great Depression in a large family. John Boy being Earl.

10/12 I never even HEARD of "Cooley High" and I went to a LOT of movies back then.

That was a great teen film but not surprised you never saw it. The 70s didn’t have a huge audience for a largely Black cast in films unless you were Black. This starred my fav from Kotter: Lawrence Hilton Jacobs, as well as SNL Garrett Morris and Aretha Franklin’s husband Glynn Turman.
