Will Geer's joke landed him in hot water with his Waltons co-star, Ellen Corby
Note to self: Do not upset Grandma Walton...

Sometimes a harmless joke can get you into trouble with your wife, even if your marriage is only fictional.
While working on The Waltons, actor Will Geer got into a spot of trouble with one of his country co-stars.
Geer played Grandpa Walton alongside Grandma Walton, played by Ellen Corby.
Previously, Geer recounted a moment when one of his remarks about the series steamed Corby up.
“A friend of mine, a writer, needed fast money,” said Geer during an interview with The Santa Fe New Mexican. “He did a piece about me for one of those papers they sell in the supermarket racks. Well, all I said was, ‘I got my favorite wife on the West Coast, a common-law wife on the East Coast, and grandma on the set.’”
Corby was so upset by the statement that she dealt Geer one of the deadliest blows she could manage: The silent treatment. Luckily, the ice-out didn’t last long.
“She [Corby] read that and she was so furious she didn’t speak to me for a week,” said Geer. “It was just a joke, I told her. Well, she finally accepted that, and she goes down to Mexico and comes back and gives me this swell poncho as a peace offering.”
However, Geer couldn’t resist ruffling his co-star's feathers once more. “She gave me the poncho, and then I said, ‘Tell me this, Ellen. What kind of fans have you got that read that stuff?’ That made her mad for another two days!”
Despite this, the two actors maintained a beautiful, albeit sometimes antagonistic, relationship. “Oh, we’re great friends, Grandma Walton and me,” said Geer.
