Marie's innocence was what made her character likeable on Everybody Loves Raymond

Though she certainly knows more than she lets on, Marie Barone is a fairly simple character. Now, that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have more than her fair share of devious schemes, but when the matriarch of the Barone family oversteps, it’s not because she’s inherently evil; it’s because she’s just a bit clueless.
Doris Roberts, who played Marie for nine years on Everybody Loves Raymond, was able to provide a peek behind the curtain during an interview with the Calgary Herald.
“With regard to Marie, it all comes through her innocence,” said the actor. “She’s not a woman who is educated. She was never taught to do anything but be a mother and a housekeeper and a wife, and that’s what she’s done.”

Though in certain episodes Marie’s behavior reached a level of absurdity, her antics reminded people of their own mothers.
“The reason Everybody Loves Raymond is successful is that it’s based on reality,” said the actor. “It’s not shtick, not forced laughter. The humor comes from situations that are very identifiable.”
