The inside scoop on Steven Spielberg's blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo in Duel
One fan thought the director was an "alien."
A good movie warrants a rewatch. The best films are like art pieces; each time you take a look, there’s something new to see.
In the case of Duel, eagle-eyed fans may have taken a second look at the 1971 film and seen the film’s director hiding in the backseat!
According to Steven Spielberg, he once attended a showing of his film, years after it had originally premiered. There, a fan asked about an “alien” hiding in the one scene.
“I’ve been waiting six years to meet you,” said Spielberg, according to The Steven Spielberg Story by Tony Crawley. “You’ve got good eyes. That’s me in the backseat!”
That’s right, for a mere second or two, Steven Spielberg can be seen in the back seat of star Dennis Weaver’s car during the film. In fact, many audiences missed the cameo because the aspect ratio of television meant that Spielberg would have been too far out of sight. In a theater setting, the director was visible.
Though it was quite hidden, Spielberg was more than pleased with his easter egg. The director was too focused on his work behind the camera.
“If I were really a dedicated filmmaker, I would have blown those shots up once the film was going to Europe,” said the actor. “But if there’s something I hate more than seeing myself in a movie, it’s seeing grain on screen. I just let it go...and not many people have picked up on that.”
