Stefanie Powers was shocked when Hart to Hart was cancelled in 1996
"I wish it could have carried on for years."
While the premise of a husband and wife detective team may seem a bit odd at first glance, Hart to Hart certainly found an audience during the sitcom’s time on air. The mystery series focused on rich couple Jonathan and Jennifer Hart, who traversed the world together, solving their fair share of gruesome crimes. Whether it was the entertaining writing or endearing cast, Hart to Hart remained popular on television until it was unceremoniously cancelled in 1984.
Series star Stefanie Powers revealed that the cancellation came as a shock to the entire cast. “Being told that Jennifer and Jonathan Hart wouldn’t be coming back for a sixth season was quite a blow,” Powers said during an interview with The Kingston Whig-Standard. For Powers, playing Jennifer Hart was more than just a job; it was her life. The actor called her co-star Robert Wagner a close friend.
”Working on Hart to Hart was a joy, and I wish it could have carried on for years," said the actor. "R.J. (Robert Wagner) is such a grand human being, a great friend, and a wonderful professional. The chemistry between us, which some have commented on, was a very happy accident.”
Though Powers and Wagner remained friends after the series ended, their powerful relationship off-screen only made their characters on the television show that much more enthralling. “We were lucky,” said Powers. “When people have a good friendship, it does not always follow that they will have rapport as actors.”
