As an activist, Mike Farrell understood that television was a powerful tool. “Like it or lump it, people are learning as a result of what they watch,” the M*A*S*H actor said during an interview with The Boston Globe. "And if you’re teaching them negative, sexist, racist, ugly, pointless, anti-human values, that’s what they’re learning. If you teach them the reverse, as I think had been the case with M*A*S*H, then that’s what they’ll learn. And I think people in the medium of television ought to look out!”

The star had certainly found himself on the right series; M*A*S*H was a show that pulled no punches and was determined to impact its audience after each and every episode. With such a strong moral compass, the cast became like a family. The actors became so close that Farrell expressed sadness at the prospect of the show’s final episode. “It will be very, very hard. It’s like tearing apart a family,” said the actor.

However, Farrell understood that even if he left M*A*S*H behind, he would carry the series with him wherever he went. “I don’t think you share this kind of experience and then sort of let it wash out when you go on to your next job, whatever that may be,” said Farrell. “M*A*S*H and the people who have affected me in a lot of ways professionally and in a lot of ways in the personal area. There isn’t any way to forget all that, and I wouldn’t want to.”
