Mike Farrell had trouble saying goodbye to his friend Alan Alda at the end of M*A*S*H
Farrell said that losing his pal was like a "heart tug."
To part from a friend can feel like losing a limb, like a part of yourself. Over the years working together on M*A*S*H, Alan Alda and Mike Farrell had grown closer than two co-stars could ever hope to be. Their relationship became a brotherly bond.
“I don’t think you share this kind of experience, and then sort of let it wash out when you go to your next job, whatever that may be,” Farrell said during an interview with the Chicago Tribune.
“M*A*S*H and the people who have been part of it have affected me in a lot of ways professionally and in a lot of ways in the personal area. There isn’t any way to forget all that, and I wouldn’t want to.”
However, Farrell also expressed that while he’d always love Alda, their relationship was bound to change after the series ended in 1983.
“When people in wartime become very close, as is the case with the people we portray, then the war is over; sometimes their lives don’t allow for that relationship to continue,” said Farrell. “And the entertainment business is such that I don’t know where our paths may cross again. Alan may be in different parts of the world, and so may I. But when I think about the fact that we may not spend a lot of time with each other in the future, it’s a curious kind of heart tug.”
