Loretta Swit said that she identified with Margaret's loneliness
"My life is full of people," said the M*A*S*H actor.

Although Margaret Houlihan dealt with her fair share of romantic trials, Loretta Swit did not seem to share her lack of luck in love.
Perhaps this was because the two women, though they shared the same face, carried a vastly different perspective on the purpose of love. Margaret spent the better part of the series looking for someone who would be willing to commit to her forever. It took her a very long time to understand that falling in love can’t always guarantee happiness.
Loretta Swit, however, understood that love came in many forms and that no romantic relationship needed to take priority over others.
While Swit acknowledged that she could sympathize with Margaret, she did not see the character as a reflection of herself.
“Do I identify with Margaret’s loneliness?” asked Swit during an interview with The Toronto Star. “Certainly. Certainly. We are all born alone, we die alone, and we live much of our lives alone. But the pursuit of happiness, which is a constitutional right, is one of my goals.”
Swit found love in many places, among family and friends. Most importantly, she found love in her M*A*S*H co-stars, with whom she formed a pseudo-family during their years on set.
“I am not a woman alone,” said Swit. “My life is full of people. I have too much love in me - too much to get and too much to give. And I need a great deal. There’s a big difference between living alone and loneliness.”
