Many who spent years laughing at Harvey Korman on their television screens might be surprised to know that the actor was certainly no optimist. Though the actor made his mark as a comedian on variety series like The Carol Burnett Show, he longed for the opportunity to bathe in the success of his own spotlight.

“There’s a lot of anger in me,” said Korman during an interview with The Des Moines Register. “I don’t know if they’re new angers, or old hostilities I’m just bringing to the surface now...I’m tired of being a little cog in a big wheel,” said the actor. “After nine years, first with Danny Kaye and now with Carol, I’m tired of playing a second banana.”

In fact, when The Carol Burnett Show was on the verge of an untimely demise on television, Korman felt strangely zen.

“In a way, it would have been a relief if we had been cancelled,” said the actor. “I could have started thinking about myself, and where I wanted to go from here, trying it as a big cog for a change.”

Fans of the variety show may rest easy. Korman adored his time on the series and loved his co-stars even more.

“I’d be sorry to leave Carol, because she’s a fantastic talent and an unbelievably marvelous person,” said Korman. “But I’m getting impatient. I could never be the star of my own variety show. Let’s face it, don’t have enough weight, enough versatility for that. But I think I’d be a good interviewer and that a panel talk show would be right down my alley.”
