Hart to Hart star Robert Wagner warned against the dangers of nostalgia
“I don’t look back very much,” said the actor.
Oasis once said, “Don’t look back in anger,” but is there truly any merit to looking back at all? We tend to revisit the past with rose colored glasses, but sometimes that wayward reminiscing distracts us from our present.
Robert Wagner adored his time on Hart to Hart. In the hit sitcom, the actor appeared alongside Stefanie Powers. The two were Jonathan and Jennifer Hart, an aristocratic couple who banded together to solve crimes. Though the series was cancelled in 1984 after airing five seasons, Powers and Wagner reunited years later for a series of Hart to Hart movies. To Wagner, returning was a mixture of anxiety and nostalgia.
“There was a rush of memories coming back, I can tell you that,” said Wagner during an interview with the Associated Press. “We were kind of anxious, because it’s ten years later and you’ve got to have that work come together. It was a special feeling to have it take off. I don’t think I’ve ever been so anxious as I was when it went on the air.”
Wagner wasn’t an actor to dwell on the past, as he admitted. “I don’t look back very much,” said the actor. “I just don’t think it’s a very good idea - I mean, professionally...It’s all smoke, anyway. You can’t grab hold of it. It’s hard to get something that’s lasting.” Of course, with its wide fan base, Hart to Hart certainly stood the test of time.
