Director Gareth Edwards said that Destroy All Monsters (1968) was one of his favorite Godzilla sequels
“I just love the idea of a monster island,” said Edwards.
An iconic monster, Godzilla fans have had the pleasure of seeing the kaiju in various forms across eras. Of course, Toho’s Godzilla series will forever be iconic, but recent adaptations like Gareth Edwards’ 2014 reboot of the series had a positive reception from audiences.
In a Comic-Con panel interview, Edwards expressed appreciation for the Toho depiction, using the 1954 film’s depiction of Godzilla to influence his 2014 successor.
“We went through hundreds of designs, and never stopped playing really until the last minute, and got to the point where it was like, 'Is there anything else that we want to change about this design?’” asked Edwards. “And I was like, ‘Personally, no, I'm very happy with it.’ And Toho was very much a part of the approval process. So it's a Toho-approved design as well."
Edwards also revealed that, of the many Godzilla sequels, one of his favorites included the 1968 film, Destroy All Monsters.
“I just love the idea of a monster island,” said Edwards. “Having a world with these creatures in it. I find that fascinating and would like to treat that realistically. I wouldn't want to limit it to one other foe, I think it's more fun to - this question will come back to haunt me if we ever do a sequel - but I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira."
